My Guess as to My Dog’s Breeds: Border Collie, Shepherd
How My Dog Came Into My Life: Maggie was 2 years old when we found her at the shelter. We were actually looking for a new cat to replace the one that had run away (and was later returned to us). I saw Maggie lying dejectedly behind the counter, never even noticing the people around her. She is a beautiful border collie mix. Her personality wasn’t what we were looking for – she was depressed and barely wagged her tail – but she seemed sweet and was easily led on a leash. For some reason, we felt we had to have this low-energy dog, and she would fit well in our one-bedroom apartment. Maggie had kennel cough, an ear infection, and flea dirt. She was pregnant and had to have the pups aborted according to the shelter’s policy. We took care of her. We called the previous owner, who told us her story.
Maggie was abandoned in West Virginia and captured on the streets by a high kill shelter. She was rescued by an Appalachian dog rescue group and brought by “doggie relay” to Rhode Island. The relay process made her afraid of cars; every time she would get in, she would be sent to another person and a new place. In Rhode Island, she was placed with a family, but they got rid of her shortly because of the mother’s allergies. She was then brought to the Boston shelter where we found her.
After 3 months with us, she was no longer a low-energy dog. She perked up and needed lots of space to run. So we moved to the country into a small house with a big yard. She is wonderfully sweet and loves everyone, especially children. She’s great with our 11-month-old son. She is in perfect health and no longer gets carsick and has no housetraining problems. She was very easily trained and takes commands so well, people think we took her to obedience school. We are so glad we have Maggie and that our children will know such a great dog.
