My Dog’s Name: Evie
Age of My Dog: 12 years
My Dog’s Birthday or Gotcha Day (or month): Sept. 12, 2001
About My Dog’s Birthday: I got Evie third hand. I saw an ad in the newspaper: a couple had gotten her and did not have time for her with their other two dogs and two babies. I fell in love with her immediately. I had wanted another Miniature Schnauzer for a long time, since college. However, I was never home and worked long hours. I also knew Evie would be good for my elderly mother, from whom I had inherited the love of Schnauzers. I got Evie when she was 6 weeks old. She was born the day after 9/11.
Evie has been a joy and one of the best things that has happened to me. She loved my mother and was such a good dog going to the assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Evie is so smart (I know, everyone says this about their dog), however, Evie was potty trained in about 2 weeks; she will not go in the house for any reason. She knew what room my mother lived in and helped my mother with her exercises. She would get on the bed and lie next to my mother. Evie also played “music” in the telephone for my mother. I would tell Evie to play music for Grandma, and she would get one of her toys that squeaked, come back to the phone and play that toy for my mother. She would also pull the wheelchair down the hallway with my mother in it while she was holding the leash. Evie was very sad and upset when my mother passed away. Even today, I can say “where’s Grandma” and Evie will start looking all over the house for her.
