Blog description: As a veterinarian, my goal is to educate people about the One World One Health initiative, which recognizes that human, animal, and environmental health are linked together. In order to attain healthy people and healthy animals there needs to be collaboration in the public health field between human and veterinary medicine. As a proud owner of 3 rescue Beagles and 2 rescue cats I will also share health tips to keep you and your pets healthy.

On February 11, 2012 Kristy Lee Cook (a season seven finalist on the FOX series) and Aaron Kelly (from season nine) will mingle with guests and belt out tunes at a benefit for the organization, which creates therapy dog programs for health care facilities.

While songs performed by the stars will stir souls, stories told by therapy dog teams will tug at attendees’ heartstrings during the two-hour event.

Dubbed Idols and Angels, the fourth annual Angel on a Leash benefit will take place February 11, 2012 from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. in the Affinia Manhattan Hotel Ballroom in New York City.

As you know, we’re always looking for ways to help our readers donate to help animals, especially ways that won’t cost readers any extra money. We’ve just learned about an exciting new partnership between Walkers Shortbread, the world famous shortbread bakery based in the Scottish Highlands, and ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).

For over 15 years, the company has produced a range of organic biscuits for Duchy Originals Limited, the company founded by HRH Prince of Wales in 1990 because of his belief in the clear advantages of organic farming. All Walkers shortbread, biscuits and oatcakes are free from artificial colors, flavors and additives; they are certified Kosher (OUD) and are suitable for vegetarians.

After a record drought here, we’ve been having some rain. Not heavy rain like we really need, mind you, but just enough to create mud in the yard. (And because of last summer’s drought, all of our grass except for the winter rye we’ve thrown out is gone. We’re down to bare dirt in places…and that, of course, means mud!)

And, as you well know, mud means muddy paws. Both our dogs have been taught “Paw” when we’re going to lift a paw to clean it and that really helps us keep the dogs’ paws a little bit cleaner. We clean each paw with an old towel we keep on the porch just for this purpose but it doesn’t help clean the area beneath the dogs’ nails.

Just like our own nails, your dog’s nails get dirt beneath them which can transport a lot of mud into the  house. We don’t usually notice that dirt at first…and then it dries and falls out somewhere inside the house!

Some people use a file to clean out that dirt but that can be dangerous if your dog jerks during the cleaning. Instead, we’ve been using the new Q-tips® Precision Tips™ cotton swabs.
