Review & Giveaway: “Pick a Pup” Children’s Book CLOSED

**This giveaway is closed. Congratulations to Rosa, Misty, and Trish, our winners!**

We don’t have any little children (well, two-legged ones) in our home but we just love this kids’ book! Pick a Pup (McElderry Books), written by Marsha Wilson Chall and illustrated by Jed Henry, tells the story of Sam, a young boy who is going to go to the shelter with his grandmother to select a pup. First, readers see Sam surrounded by dog books as he wants to know:

Is there a way to know the one–
a clue, a sign, a trick?

Sam and Gram head to the shelter and along the way study all the dogs they meet, from the “sit-in-your-lap dog” to the “runs-right-up pup” to the “pedigreed-Who’s Who pup.”

Sam arrives at the shelter and is surrounded by pups and asks that eternal question we all have thought when we visit an animal shelter:

“I want them all.
How can I pick just one?”

Sam soon learns the answer, though, when one pup burst through the pooch pack to greet Sam and he declares, “Gram, this pup picked me!”

We love this book for its happy portrayal of a shelter visit! It’s also excellent for its recognition that all dogs are different not just in appearance but in personality.

We’ve got three copies of Pick a Pup to give away!

My rescued pups have all picked me! The majority of them were going to be euthanized and never put up for sdoption when I worked at the shelter. Looking into those beautiful eyes for seven days would do me in.

What a cute idea for a book!

We picked our dog Bo by searching online. We looked at the “available dogs” list for just about every single rescue in our area. We then made a chart with the top few and Bo was our #1, so we went to meet him first. We thought he seemed perfect and brought him home that day!

The SPCA brought Penny to my vet. She was found in a ditch and had a broken pelvis, heartworms, a rope imbedded in her neck, a bullet hole in her thigh, and she was pregnant with nine puppies. They treated all her problems, then asked me if I would consider adopting her. I took her home for a trial weekend and we decided to keep each other. She’s the best dog ever.

I actually inherited my pup, but I love him (Boston Terrier). Before getting him, I had researched other breeds: chihuahua, Yorkie, and Bassett Hound.

My husband picked out our dog before we met…I think he liked that he should be a good retriever when he went duck hunting, but he’s just a pet! :-)

I worked at a Humane Society for almost 5 years and my Jack Russell was brought in one very cold day in March. He was just under two weeks old and was in pretty rough shape. He was malnurished, very dehydrated, and was missing an eye. The vet wasn’t sure he would make it through the night. So I took him home and slowly nursed him back to health. He is now 6 years old and is doing great.

My other dog that recently passed away was brought into the pet store that I was working at. She was a shy little border collie mix. She was so shy that she would hide from people. I fell in love instantly. She lived with us for 11 years until she died of cancer. She was extremely loyal and the best dog I could have asked for. I miss her terribly.

I picked out Schooner and Skipper. I love them to pieces. Our children are grown so Schooner and Skipper are our boys! We have triplet grandchildren and they would LOVE to read the book to Schooner and Skipper.

I looked at a local rescue group’s website and fell in love with our dog. We filled out the paperwork, had the home check and got approved. He has added so much love and joy to our lives we cannot imagine that he was a stray at one time.

I got my dog a month ago when a co-worker didn’t have the time to care for him anymore. He’s a 7 yr. old retriever and he’s already brought great joy to us. Thanks.
