We recently received a copy of the new The Dog Trainer’s Complete Guide to a Happy, Well-Behaved Pet, part of the Quick and Dirty Tips line of helpful books.

Written by Jolanta Benal, the host of The Dog Trainer podcast which has been downloaded over 1.6 million times, the book answers many problems confronted by dog families. Jolanta’s dog-training philosophy is simple: playful, rewards-based training fosters sociable, polite behavior that is the hallmark of a likeable dog.

Jolanta has sound advice on everything you want to know, including:

  • How to housetrain your dog for good
  • How to read your dog’s body language
  • How to avoid common training mistakes and fix the ones you’ve already made

Many of the problems such as teaching your dog to give up items or getting your dog to walk politely on a leash are answered in simple, easy to follow steps. The book even includes some advanced tips such as teaching your dog a warning cue for unpleasant tasks like giving medication so they have predictability in their lives or teaching your dog to file his own nails with a homemade doggie nail file (we’ve GOT to try out this tip!)

Dog lovers–both new and lifelong dog families–will find practical advice throughout this handy guide, all aimed at helping us improve our lives with our dogs while, at the same time, improving our dogs’ lives as well.

The biggest challenge for us in training both Tiki & Colossus is that they can both be stubborn. I know I’ve made mistakes in their training, I just don’t know how to fix what I’ve already done!

  • Jodi Trudel

My biggest problem with our 1 dog is his Hyperness. He cannot be trusted to be alone for a single minute or he will be into something or play fighting with our other dog. When we arent home he has to be in a kennel. Just cant be trusted.

My biggest training problem with my pack is my lack of “social connections”.. My dog, Zora, is very wary of strangers, but I don’t really feel comfortable enough with people except family and close friends to ask them to come over and help me socialize my dog. She is already not shy or aggressive(she experiences both with strangers, depending on who they are) with my family and close friends.

  • Shelley

The biggest training challenge with our dog, Ella, is she is aggressive towards other dogs especially bigger dogs. She also is a huge barker. Ella was a stray no one claimed at the shelter. She was one when we adopted her and has had these issues even when she was at the shelter. I would really love to be able to get help with these issues.

  • Erica meyer

My biggest training challeng is that I have a rescued “marker” pug. He gets so nervious when anyone walks in front of our house or worse comes over to visit that he marks.

  • Donna Wallis

My 1 year old rescued Jack Russel Terrier needs to learn company manners and to walk on a leash. She is so smart so I must be doing something wrong and really need this book.

  • http://www.somethingwagging.com Pamela

My biggest challenge is challenging Honey. She’s a smart girl who learns the basics very quickly. I need to figure out some more advanced things to teach her.

  • Danielle E.

For me it is pulling on the leash I think.

  • Lori Miller

My biggest training challenge is working with my rescued terrier. He was starved before he came his new loving home and it is very hard for him to focus when any form of food is involved. He loves to learn and work for treats, but getting him to focus is a challenge.

  • http://lifewithdesmond.com lauren

desmond has been one training challenge after the other: separation anxiety, whining, leash reactivity, not sleeping well, chugging water & throwing up. he’s fun. :-) i guess the leash reactivity is the biggest challenge. we are nowhere near finished with that.

  • Sharon

Having a stubborn dog. Schooner does not like to come when you call him. You can see it in his eyes and then he takes off in a different direction wanting you to chase him all over the place. In agility class he will sometimes decide that he is not going to follow the the course and does his own thing…I thought it was because he was tired of doing the same course over and over at class and decided he was not going to do the course one more times and ran his own course. I have never been able to get him to come when called all the time. HELP!!

  • Lisa

I have a barker — haven’t figured how to work with that effectively yet, but I’m sure my neighbors would really appreciate improvement in that area.

  • Jennifer

My biggest challenge is preventing my 8 month old Havanese, Romeo, from stealing and shredding everything. He will not listen when I issue the “Drop It” command.

  • http://robin.lindzer.com Robin Lindzer

I love your magazine. Keep up the great work! :-)

  • http://www.twofrenchbulldogs.com Benny & Lily

mom said I need this, but its not true
    Lily (& Benny)

  • Mary Witter

By far, the biggest training challenge I have with 11-month old, 80 lb. Casey R. Doodle is in getting him to control his joy and wild exuberance when people approach to pet him. He’s giddy with love for everyone we meet. I’ve tried everything–click-treats, praise, consistancy–it seems his joy cannot be contained!

  • Kim Davis

My biggest challenge with Rylie and Abbie is their jealousy of attention given to the other one when training. They are English Springer Spaniels and they can be very stubborn when it comes to doing what they want to do when they want to do it.

  • http://thedoglived.blogspot.com Teresa

My training issue is separation anxiety–Seamus (a beagle) howls madly when left alone. No amount of exercise helps this.

  • http://lifeofabeagle.blogspot.com/ katie

My biggest problem with Roxy is she barks way too much, I know a dog is suppose to bark but not as as much as Roxy does, she also goes crazy when she sees larger dogs, Molly I have to teach how to stay put of the garbage and to not beg, besides that they are angels.

  • http://woofwoofmama.com Liz

Our biggest challenge is leash pulling while walking. We are doing much better but still not all the way there yet!

  • http://goyay.blogspot.com Danetta

My biggest training challenge with our chihuahua is that he will NOT come to you when called. He is a quick learner and learns everything else so quick, except that one “here” command! Our biggest training challenge with our great dane is that he thinks everyone that enters the house has to come and see him and he will bark until that person goes and pets or talks to him.

  • debbie

My biggest challenge lately has been getting her to walk beside me. We have a ton of deer this year, that will get within feet of us. It drives her crazy. She hasn’t been wanting to pay attention, and walk correctly.

Toby has an anxiety disorder and he drives me crazy with his whining and barking at every little sound.

  • Kathy Godbey

Lola is still not totally housebroken even at 5 months. Maybe this book could help with that.

  • Cheryl Lynn Dean

I have 4 Dogs 3 are not totally housebroken I would love to figure out how to break them from going potty in my house

  • Misty

Leash walking, because we don’t have to practice it very often.

  • Nancy

The non-sneaking stay needs work around here.

  • Rick

    Flushing instead of pointing.

  • Jennifer Boehme

I can’t get Belle to stop jumping on someone when the come here. She is so excited she jumps.

  • http://livinginaslackersparadise.blogspot.com/ Julie D.

My biggest challenge is getting my dog to stop pulling while walking on a leash. She wants to pay attention to everything except me, even if I have treats.

  • Michelle Spayde

My biggest challenge is helping my Pomeranian to gain confidence. She’s a puppy mill survivor/rescue that I adopted last year, and while she’s come a very long way from being nearly feral, we seem to be “stuck”.

  • Kelly

My biggest training problem is teaching the dogs to sit and wait before I put their food down and before they come in the door for a walk. We also need help with a command for “out” for when its time to get out of the pool.

  • Tabitha Miller

My biggest training challenge with my dog is barking in the car. I sometimes have successes getting Pharaoh to focus on me and I reward him with food when he either pays attention to me or watches a passerby without barking, but it’s so difficult to be consistent with him and drive at the same time! I need a second me in the car at all times!

  • Marci Biagi

I have a two year old Australian Shepherd who jumps on everyone, whines or barks when they come into the house. She is so well behaved and knows all of her basic commands even advanced service dog commands. She can open and close doors, drawers, cabinets, carry groceries in her own back pack and can pick up things for me. She has gone into restaurants and stores since she was 10 weeks and is very well behaved when her vest is on, but loses her brains at home when the doorbell rings or company comes in. I am partially disabled and have to stop this one behavior. Please help me!

  • http://noellesdigressions.blogspot.com/ Noelle Barrick

Brewster’s (5-year-old Pom-Chi mix) biggest training challenge is being reactive to strange dogs and people. I adopted him from a rescue organization who took him in as a stray. It was clear that the people who had him had been neglectful of both his mental and physical health, probably because they didn’t know what it takes to raise a healthy dog. Since he’s become physically healthy, he’s done very well behavior-wise with the exception of meeting strangers. They terrify him and he reacts aggressively.

  • Panya

My biggest training challenge is that I have one dog and one puppy who have very different personalities/needs/etc.

  • Dawn

My biggest issue is that my 6 yr old collie Murphy tries to jump up to kiss people when they come over.

  • Tara Landers

My biggest training issue is my dog barking at people he doesn’t know. When they come over, when we are on a walk, if he doesn’t recognize them, he barks.

  • shilohsmom

Shiloh doesn’t do recall well when he takes off after a scent. He’s highly trained in every other way, but when he goes after a scent, it’s like he’s lost all his training. That’s why he can never go off-leash outside in an unfenced area.

  • Joe Lacy

Getting the dog to heel while walkng is our biggest training challenge.

  • Tanya

My biggest training challenge is to get Pookie and Tootsie to walk beside me/heel.

  • Len

My dogs are fine but my neighbor needs this book badly!

  • Bonnie Craft

my dog is completely out of control. I could really use this book

  • Kim Davis

I have issues with Rylie and Abbie pulling really hard when my husband and I try to take them for a walk. They walk us instead…lol

  • Joanne D

My biggest training challenge is trying to train a hyperactive 12-year old dog who has been able to be indisciplined for the duration of his life!

  • http://www.mylifeofwhatifs.com Stacy Swann

Housetraining! Once we think she’s got it down there are accidents again! ugh!

  • http://www.facebook.com/anna.galanos Anna Galanos

Getting him to be still long enough and focus without wiggling from excitement.

  • Sadie

biggest issue is constancy in training – we need to set aside time to do it.

  • Debbie B

I hope the training is based on positive reinforcement.

  • Meghan Riegler

My biggest challenge with my Flat-Coated Retriever is his separation anxiety. He barks or whines non-stop whenever I leave him and gets so stressed that he gives himself an upset stomach. I’ve been trying to desensitize him to being in his crate, but literally the second he goes into his crate I can turn around let him out and he’s gotten anxious already. We got him when he was 10 months old and he had anxiety when we got him. Thank you for hosting this giveaway!
