Yes, it’s Friday…but, as you know, we always publish Fido’s Freebie Friday on Thursday afternoon so it will go out in our Friday newsletter. Well, this week our Thursday was a busy one. Irie had to go to the veterinarian for a dental cleaning and to check a tooth with a chipped tip. We didn’t think it would turn into much more than that although we were prepared to pull the tooth if, after x-ray, it turned out that the chipped end was actually a break and the tooth couldn’t be saved.
Well, the single tooth problem turned into a three tooth issue when x-rays showed that she had an abscess! Two molars on the lower jaw, beneath the chipped (and, we learned, broken) tooth had an abscess below the gum line. Irie wound up having three extractions.
We’re so fortunate, though, because our neighbor is our veterinarian and she knows that Irie’s a fearful dog. Although she’s made great strides, she still gets stressed in some situations so I was able to stay with her after she had a morphine injection. I sat with her for about half an hour while she relaxed then came home while they did the dental work. As soon as she was pretty stable on her feet, I was able to pick her up and bring her back home to recover.
Tiki was incredibly protective of Irie last night, clearly able to see that her sister wasn’t feeling well. Irie spent all afternoon and evening lying beside me on the couch. Tiki would allow our cats Inca and Felix, best buddies of both dogs, to come over and see Irie but she blocked the way when Linus (our own version of Grumpy Cat some days) tried to come to the couch.
Today Irie’s doing so great although we’re feeding her only soft food and treats. She’ll be on antibiotics for 10 days as she heals up.
So now it’s back to business as usual here and we’re playing catchup after yesterday! It’s time for our weekly Fido’s Friday’s Freebie that we share with All Things Dog Blog and Doggies and Stuff.
