OK, this is a new one on us! We try to keep up with all the latest and greatest technological changes but this one slipped through the cracks.
When we first saw the new PetHub TapTag, we did a doubletake. What do you tap it with? What happens when it’s tapped? What exactly was the Tap?
Tap refers to a wireless transmission between a device–like a smartphone–and an embedded chip. The Near Field Communication (NFC) chip, in this case, is embedded in the dog tag! To read the tag, all you have to do is “tap” it or get it very near a smartphone with NFC capabilities. Now that we’ve learned about this, we realize that we’ve seen this tap technology at many places…on gas pumps, checkout counters, even phone-to-phone transactions for data sharing.
With PetHub, when a lost dog’s TapTag is read by a smartphone, his PetHub profile will appear where you can put all sorts of information: address, plenty of phone numbers, veterinary information and contacts, neighbors, your travel itinerary, and more.
Worried that the person who finds your dog won’t be able to read the TapTag with their phone? The back side of the TapTag contains a QR code like other PetHub tags that can be scanned to access your PetHub profile.
