Product: Pork Chomps

What It Is: dog chews made from natural, baked pork skin

Manufacturer: Scott Pet Products

DogTipper Review: It was a rainy afternoon when we called our two taste testers, Tiki and Irie, into duty to taste a chew: Pork Chomps.

Although these look like rawhide chews, they are not. (We no longer give our dogs rawhide chews. Both dogs have a scary habit of swallowing rawhide chews before they’re totally chewed…then gagging/coughing up the half-eaten rawhide. The risk of choking and potential intestinal blockage led us to stop giving rawhide.)

Pork Chomps chews are made from baked pork skin, a product much easier for dogs to digest than rawhide. Other benefits: according to Scott Pet Products, Pork Chomps are treated with an antibacterial process to address the threat of pathogens that plagues rawhides. Also, the baked-in flavors in the chews won’t stain couches and carpets.

And the true test of that no-stain claim came as soon as we gave the dogs the Pork Chomps. We gave the dogs their chews (these were bacon flavored mini knots; peanut butter and pepperoni are also available in shapes like smoked bagels and rolls.) They headed to their favorite taste testing platform: the bed.

The chews were a hit. Irie (our lab mix who is a real power chewer) enjoyed her treat for about half an hour while Tiki savored hers almost an hour. Both were intently focused on their chews.

And, just as the package said, the chews left no stains!

Both dogs give Pork Chomps a definite paws up!

In Their Words: According to Kathy Bassett, Marketing Director for Scott Pet Products, “For people who care passionately about their pets, rawhide raises too many questions about safety. And besides, why would you want your dog to chew on something with the texture of an old shoe?”
