Hollywood Barks! The Tails Behind Famous Dogs, Their Co-Stars, and Their Companions

Author: Kathryn Segura

Publisher: Happy Tails Books

Have you ever wished you could get a little behind the scenes peek into those movies that include dog stars? Just a way to see what the whole process is like from selecting the dog to working with the human actors?

Here’s the answer: Hollywood Barks! This new title authored by expert trainer Kathryn Segura takes you right onto the set of numerous movies to learn more about the dogs and their human co-stars. Like munching through a bag of potato chips, this book, with its short chapters sprinkled with lots of movie tidbits and photos from the sets, is just about impossible to put down.

Segura’s experience includes movies like There’s Something About Mary, for which she trained a border terrier and his backup. Photos capture star Cameron Diaz with her four-legged co-star, and the author describes star Ben Stiller. “Everyone on the set was a dog lover, and Ben Stiller’s performance with the dogs was definitely a highlight,” says the author.

One especially touching chapter is called “Finding My Heart at the Burbank Shelter” and covers the search for a dog to appear in Indecent Proposal (you remember it: Demi Moore, Woody Harrelson, and Robert Redford). Kathryn is in search of a friendly, lovable dog and believes she’s found one, a pointer, at the Burbank Shelter. The director OKs the pointer and Kathryn goes off to get him, but is warned of the shelter’s first-come, first-serve policy and that people arrive early to adopt (if only all shelters could be so lucky!!) After camping out in the parking lot, she’s beat out by another adopter…but winds up finding Chloe, the dog that stars in the movie and takes a leading role in Kathryn’s life.

Sprinkled throughout the book, you’ll also find “Behaviors with Bailey,” instructions for teaching your dog some of Hollywood’s most-needed behaviors. You’ll learn how to teach your dog to nudge, “cover” to show embarrassment, put his head down and look adorable, and many other tricks.

Price: $14.95

For a Paws Cause: A portion of proceeds from the sales of this book goes to help animal rescue organizations.
