Product: Hands-Free Cuff, Leash and Collar System from The Shabby Dog

What It Is: patent leather leash and collar attached to an adjustable cuff for the dog walker to wear for a hands-free walk

DogTipper Review: I was fascinated by the concept of the cuff-leash-collar combo when I first heard about it. Just a few months ago while walking our dogs, one suddenly saw a neighbor’s dog, jerked loose, and, in a split second, took off to say hi. It wasn’t a big problem–our road has very little traffic and our dog and our neighbor’s dog are great buddies–but it really made me realize how quickly a dog’s leash can be dropped (or pulled) from your grip.

So when the opportunity arose to receive a hands-free cuff, leash, and collar system from The Shabby Dog for review, I jumped at the chance.

The choices of leashes, cuffs, and collars are as varied as your tastes. Sold separately or as a set, the system is designed not only to be stylish and colorful but to offer you an option for a hands-free, safer dog walk.

The Cuff

The hands-free cuff comes in Italian leather with suede lining, leather with a crystal heart, patent leather with an accompanying wrist watch, and patent leather with suede lining in a variety of colors (as seen in these photos of the model we reviewed.)

The cuff is adjustable to your wrist size, securing with a sturdy buckle (one strong enough to handle any tugging by our 55- or 70-pound dogs). Stylish enough to be worn as a cuff bracelet, our aqua and lime model was as cheerful as a spring dog walk.

The Leash

The cuff attaches to a five-foot leash (each component is sold as a set or separately).

The leash sports a D-ring so it can be used as a traditional leash without the cuff as well. Because of its patent leather finish, the leash is virtually waterproof and won’t stretch like a traditional leather leash if it should get wet.

The Collar

Like the matching cuff and leash, the collar we received for review was a beautiful aqua and lime combo in smooth patent leather (promising easy cleaning).  Smooth edging and hardware as polished as jewelry meaning a no-rub fit for our dogs.

Collar sizes range from 8-11 inches all the way to a 23-26 inch model. In a nod to the stylishness for which The Shabby Dog is known, a bejeweled bone-shaped charm hangs from the collar, ensuring your dog will be looking not too shabby indeed on your next walk.

The system isn’t inexpensive–components start at $36 for collars and $40 for cuffs with leashes priced at $88–but can be mixed and matched (or, if the budget’s tight, you can start with the cuff and add to the combo at a later date).

The system’s hands-free feature is excellent–whether your hands might be needed to tend to another dog, a two-legged child, a phone call, or your car keys (or even an unexpected fall). With your dog secured to your wrist, you’ll have the peace of mind of knowing you and your dog are firmly attached even if your hold on the leash should fail. Extra security, peace of mind, and plenty of style all add up to a real winner from The Shabby Dog.
