Title: Am I Boring My Dog? And 99 Other Things Every Dog Wishes You Knew
Author: Edie Jarolim
DogTipper Review: Like us, Edie Jarolim came to the world of dog writing after primarily focusing on travel journalism, and through the years we’d had the chance to meet her several times during our travels. When the opportunity came to receive a review copy of Edie’s book, we eagerly said we’d love to review her new title.
A first-time dog owner, Edie developed the book to help answer the things new dog lovers are afraid to ask. And that had us nervous; after a combined century (good grief…how can that be?) of living with dogs, would we learn anything from it? Could this book teach these old dogs new tricks?
You bet. We learned a great deal from this book, all delivered in a fun, easy-to-read style. Edie covers not only the questions you have but the questions you might not even think to ask:
- Should I get health insurance for my dog?
- What’s the latest word on vaccinations?
- How do I avoid foods that might be recalled?
- Is it okay to make my dog a vegetarian?
One question we found especially helpful was a subject Edie recently explored on her excellent blog, WillMyDogHateMe.com: do I need to brush my dog’s teeth? This is a topic we already knew the answer to (we’ve had to go the cleaning and even the extraction route in years past with previous dogs) and one we kept meaning to address with our two-year-old dogs. Edie answers the question with practical tips. We love her suggestion for starting slowly using a bouillon-soaked finger to rub your dog’s teeth and gums to acclimate your dog before progressing on to toothpaste and brushes. Simple and low-cost, this is our favorite kind of tip (and you know how we love tips.) Thanks to this suggestion, our dogs are now on their way to movie star teeth, having progressed from the bouillon gum massage to real brushing, and, like a dreaded dental visit, we’re not putting off this issue any longer.
For all its serious subject matter (including topics like “how do I know when ‘it’s time’–and what do I do when I’ve decided?”), the book is a fun, lighthearted and always educational read, regardless of your level of experience with dogs. Am I Boring My Dog? gets a definite paws up for all dog lovers.
Don’t miss the trailer for Am I Boring My Dog? starring, of course, Edie’s rescue dog, Frankie!
