Title: Bad to the Bone: Memoir of a Rebel Doggie Blogger
Author: Bo Hoefinger
Publisher: Kensington Publishing Corp.
Bad to the Bone; Memoir of a Rebel Doggie Blogger is the “autobiography” of lovable canine Bo. No, not that Bo, not First Dog Portuguese Water Dog Bo that lives in the White House. This Bo is a former shelter dog, a retriever-chow mix who lives in Georgia with his parents, dog-sidekick Copper, and Moose, the cat. Having reached the age of 16, Bo looks back on his life with precision, insight, and most of all, witty, sarcastic humor. The book is simply one of the funniest I’ve ever read.
Whether it’s recalling a weekend with hapless dogsitters who are no match for Bo’s carefully executed escape plan, observing the family’s move from New York to Georgia (where, he finds, “Dogs barked in a slow drawl, squirrels seemed to jog instead of sprint, and the creeks…all tasted like sweet tea”), or organizing a backyard full of pets to filch food at a family picnic, Bo’s rapier wit extracts every kibble of humor from each incident.
Even when faced with family emergencies such as his “Mother’s” serious illness, Bo’s voice never turns maudlin. Instead, he remains focused on his role in this family drama: finding fun in everyday life and cheering up those around him with his upbeat attitude. With his Mother recuperating at home, Bo plots to rid the house of a troublesome woodpecker whose incessant hammering deprives her of the peace and quiet she needs during her recovery.
“I scoured the house for a gun I could use, only to find that my parents may be pacifists…We live in a Georgia suburb where it was illegal not to have a gun…The easy answer to the family’s problem was simple. Buy a gun; shoot the bird.”
In the end, cooler heads (his parents’) prevailed and “Woody” was foiled by a strategically placed garbage bag over the home’s siding.
Although he would hardly admit it, there is a serious side to Bo’s efforts; the book is dedicated to shelter workers and some of the proceeds from the book’s sale are donated to rescue homeless dogs.
When it comes to digging up life’s true treasures, Bo knows! –John
