What It Is: all-natural frozen ice cream treat for dogs
Manufacturer: Nature’s Variety
DogTipper Review: Like most dogs, our two dogs love frozen treats. We occasionally let them lick the bowl when we’ve finished an ice cream dessert but, because it has so much sugar and lactose (not to mention fat and calories), we don’t give our dogs human ice cream. Because of this, we jumped at the chance to sample Sweet Spots, the doggie ice cream from Nature’s Variety, to see how our dogs liked this ice cream goodie made especially for canines.
Nature’s Variety sent us a coupon for a free box of Sweet Spots. It comes in two flavors–Peanut Butter & Honey and Sweet Potato & Molasses. Since we couldn’t choose, we used the coupon for one box and bought the other one.
Each box contains four individual 3.5 fluid ounce servings. They’re not inexpensive–the suggested retail price is $4.99 although we paid slightly more at a small dog boutique store. However, the ingredients are 98 percent lactose-free, and the ice cream is fortified with whey protein and enriched with live active yogurt cultures.
But enough about the good stuff in the ice cream…the true test was our two taste testers, Tiki and Irie.
The dogs loved both flavors. Irie loved her Sweet Spots and had it eaten before it could start to thaw. Tiki was a little hesitant at first (she is with all frozen treats and always waits until they start to melt…and until Irie is eyeing her treats…until she eats them!) but had hers finished in about half an hour. A big paws up from Irie and Tiki!
Special Note: On July 17, 2010, Nature’s Variety is coordinating the World’s Largest Ice Cream Social in honor of National Ice Cream Month. Select retailers will be offering free samples of Sweet Spots; for more info and store locations, see the Nature’s Variety News.
