DogTipper Review: By Nature is a small New England company that produces high-quality food and treats for cats and dogs. The company’s objective is “to offer foods that are formulated to promote a strong immune system and to help support pets’ natural defenses against the effects of aging, and physical and environmental stress.” To that end, they offer an array of By Nature dog foods, each formulated for dogs of different sizes, ages and appetites.

We were recently sent a large bag of By Nature® Large Breed Adult Dog Formula (one of their newest products) to evaluate. This product consists of a dry, rounded kibble containing:

• protein (chicken and salmon)
• whole grains and fiber (ground barley, ground oats, ground brown rice, alfalfa meal and dried chicory root)
• fruits and vegetables (tomato pomace, sweet potatoes, carrots, blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, and turmeric)
• flaxseed
• chelated minerals (zinc, manganese, copper)
• taurine

as well as a host of other vitamin and mineral sources. By volume, the major ingredients are chicken meal, ground barley, ground oats, and ground brown rice. You can check out the full list of ingredients here.

Also of interest to us was the list of ingredients which were NOT present such as meat by-products, by-product meal, white rice, brewer’s grains, grain by-products, corn, wheat, soy or artificial flavors, preservatives or colors.

By Nature states that their Large Breed Adult Dog Formula is designed to help large, mature dogs maintain bone and joint health. This food contains 380 calories per cup.

Both of our girls can now be considered mature and both top 65 pounds, so the formula seemed like a good fit for them. But, for the true test, would they like it?

For one week, we fed By Nature Large Breed Adult Dog Formula to our two dogs. Of course, Irie, our lab mix who rarely turns down any food, dove right in and soon polished her bowl. Tiki, though, can sometimes be hesitant to try a new food. But, after a few preliminary sniffs, she too was crunching along, soon emptying her plate as well. Our resident taste-testers gave By Nature Large Breed Adult Dog Formula a definite paws-up!
