DogTipper Book Review: By now most of us have heard plenty about the horrors of the puppy mill industry. Despite growing public outrage and new legislation aimed at curtailing the worst kinds of abuse, the trade still operates in many parts of the U.S., feeding a steady demand for purebred dogs. We all wish we could do more to remedy this sorry situation.
How inspiring, then, to read about an organization dedicated not only to taking in and rehabilitating individual victims of puppy mills but also to crusading against the system itself. Such an organization is Main Line Animal Rescue in Chester Spring, Pennsylvania which has launched several initiatives aimed at carrying the fight to the puppy mill trade by exposing their barbaric practices. One particularly notable campaign has been their billboard program which has been very successful in raising awareness of puppy mill abuses.
Dog Blessed: Puppy Mill Survivor Stories is a collection of stories about individual dogs who have been rescued from puppy mills by MLAR and adopted out to loving “forever homes.” All were victims of shocking abuse and most still carry physical and psychological scars from their ordeals, yet they have survived to become beloved members of their adopted families. Most of the stories are presented in the words of their adopting families, with added comments and backstories by the author, Lisa Fischer, herself a volunteer at Main Line Animal Rescue and the coordinator of MLAR’s Over the Mill support group, which helps rehabilitate adopted puppy mill survivors.
Although the context of these stories is grim indeed, each successful adoption proves inspiring reading as we witness not only the dedication of the humans who have rescued and adopted them but also the incredible resilience of the dogs themselves as they overcome the traumas of their past to take their places as affectionate and trusted members of their families.
