Author: Ted Kerasote

Dogtipper Review: Author and photographer Ted Kerasote was bereft after the death of his beloved Merle, the dog he made famous in the national bestseller, Merle’s Door: Lessons from a Freethinking Dog.

Several years passed as he threw himself into his work as an outdoor writer focusing on the interrelationship between people and nature. But, he always hoped that eventually he would find another canine companion to share his love of the outdoors.

Finally, in 2009, he discovered Pukka, a tiny Yellow Labrador retriever pup and Ted judged that the time was right to begin an0ther relationship. Pukka is the story of the development of the bond between Ted and Pukka as the engaging pup grows to take his place in Ted’s life as Merle’s worthy successor.

The story is told in Pukka’s words (“translated” by Kerasote), in disarmingly simple language, each page adorned with color photos taken by Ted and other photographers. It makes a quick read, but covers a lot of ground as the pair explore ever-expanding landscapes in the American West, hiking, camping, and even river rafting together (at first, scary for Pukka). Pukka is up for every challenge, however,  developing into an intelligent, energetic member of the family. As Pukka says,

Best of all–and I don’t know how I learned this, since we never practiced it–I feel like Ted and I are a team. He shows me things I haven’t seen; I show him things he can’t hear of smell. He stands by me; I stand by him.
