DogTipper Review: In January, everyone’s thoughts turn to losing some of that holiday weight…and that includes our dogs, too. With activity levels a little lower than usual due to the season’s bad weather, it’s easy for dogs to pack on a few extra pounds. Even just a couple of extra pounds on your pooch can be equivalent to many extra pounds on you (just think how many times larger you are than your dog!)
We were very eager to try DogSlim Snack Bites, one of several products in the DogSlim® line that is designed to help dogs lose weight. (PetAg also produces DogSlim Powder, a supplement for overweight adults dogs.) The Snack Bites are low-calorie and low-fat (a real contrast to many dog treats which are often high in fat.)
The line includes three varieties; we received two from PetAg for review:
- Nutrition Snack Bites
- Fruit and Veggie Snack Bites
(The company also produces Sweet Potato & Rice Snack Bites.)
The first treat we tried was the Nutrition Snack Bites:

These resembled small oatmeal cookies and smelled good enough to eat and with good reason: the primary ingredients include pumpkin, whole wheat flour, buttermilk powder, oat bran, water, glycerin, molasses, apples, and cranberries. These are a low 18.5 calories per treat. We liked the high fiber content (5 percent crude fiber), and the fact that they’re all-natural and oven-baked.
The other treat we received was the Fruit & Veggie Snack Bites:

These smell (and look) like fruit-flavored cookies in three different colors: green, red, and yellow. Actually, those colors were the only downside we saw in these treats; they included three food colorings: FD & C red #40, FD & C yellow #5, and FD & C blue #1. (Let’s face it: the dogs don’t care what color the treats are so why include this?) Other than the colorings, we liked what we saw in the ingredients list: wheat flour, corn flour (although this could be problematic for some dogs), applesauce, oat flour, oatmeal, rice flour, apple fiber, carrot powder, strawberry powder, cinnamon, and more. These treats weighed in at 25 calories per bite or treat. These treats are also oven-baked.
And the verdict of our dogs? Irie and Tiki both loved the Nutrition Snack Bites (which isn’t too surprising since they love pumpkin). Irie loved the Fruit and Veggie Snack Bites but Tiki was tentative and didn’t take hers (also not surprising; she’s a pickier eater.)
Our verdict? Although we probably wouldn’t purchase the Fruit and Veggie Snack Bites for our dogs because of the food coloring, we give a definite paws up for the Nutrition Snack Bites! We appreciated its simple list of ingredients, the low fat content, high fiber content, and the fact that the dogs loved them!
