Eyenimal Pet Cam Review

Product: Eyenimal Pet Cam

What it Is: collar-mounted video camera for cats and dogs

Manufacturer: Dogtek®, Clearwater, Florida

DogTipper Review: We’ve been reading the bestselling Inside of a Dog; What Dogs See, Smell, and Know which describes how our dogs experience the world and how that perception differs from our own. The author, a trained animal behaviorist, describes a dog’s worldview from 18 or so inches off the ground. It’s a fascinating study but wouldn’t it be great to actually be able to see and hear for ourselves what our dogs experience?

Well, guess what: we can! Thanks to a new product, the Eyenimal Video Cam, our pets’ daily activities can be recorded and reviewed from their perspective. If you’ve ever wondered what Rover was doing in the backyard (or where your cat like to hide), this is your chance.

The Eyenimal Pet Cam is a small, weather-resistant digital video camera which attaches to the pet’s collar. It’s not much bigger (2.4×1.8x.6 inches ) or heavier (1.2 oz) than a collar tag and can record up to 2 1/2 hours of pet activity. The specifications also include:

  • autofocus
  • video and audio capture
  • 640 x 840 resolution
  • 8 GB memory capacity
  • NiMH rechargeable lithium-ion battery (USB charging)
  • USB 2.0 connectivity
  • Windows, MacOS, and Linux compatibility
  • .AVI video format

As noted above, the camera is weather-resistant (but not waterproof) and is suitable for use on both cats and dogs. (The manufacturer suggests using a breakaway collar for cats.) The Eyenimal Pet Cam has received quite a bit of attention in the pet world. Dr. Marty Becker, resident veterinarian on “Good Morning America” and “The Dr. Oz Show” and nationally syndicated pet columnist, gave it a “Becker’s Best” at the 2011 Global Pet Expo in Orlando, Florida.

When we were offered an Eyenimal to try out, we jumped at the chance. We decided that we would let Irie be the first one to try it as her short fur wouldn’t be as likely to block the camera’s lens as would Tiki’s longer hair. The camera attached to Irie’s collar with a unique plastic clip designed to keep the lens parallel to the ground. She didn’t seem bothered by the camera as we leashed up for our morning walk; it’s digital with no moving parts and that is a plus with a cautious dog like Irie.

We give a paws up to the Eyenimal Pet Cam! Although it might not be an absolutely essential pet product, it does open up a completely new way to enjoy your pet and see the world through his eyes.

  • This is so cool! We’ll be traveling around the country with Gus in a couple of months and it would be SO fun to have one of these to video from Gus’s perspective. Thanks for the review!

  • I think this would be way too much fun to have! I bought the book, Cat Cam, and enjoyed seeing Cooper’s pictures, but my cats aren’t allowed outside and my dogs all have long fur so it might not work for them either but i think this is a great idea!!
