For all the popularity of social networking sites, there has been a glaring omission in too many services: No Pets Allowed! For pet-centric households, this is patently unfair. How can we share our lives in a meaningful way without our pets taking their place as part of our online family?
Well, that deficiency has been remedied with the launch of Virtual Petwork, a social networking site devoted exclusively to pets. In many respects, it functions like other social networks. When you join up, you create a free account for your pet. Any and all pets are welcome to join.
Once your pet’s account is active, you’ll “help” your pet establish his online identity by “translating” his thoughts and typing it out for him. These “anipal” communications are already the basis for many successful blogs. It’s another way to have fun with our pets.
Virtual Petwork offers various ways for your pet to interact. They can blog, create groups, chat on message boards and write on each others’ walls. They are also able to share photos and support their favorite pet charities. Members can add their Twitter feed to their profile and tweet from Virtual Petwork as well.
The site is the creation of Chief Doggie Officer Marteeny and Doggie Vice President Tootsie. Teeny is already well known as the mascot of the popular Teeny’s Friends organization that provides toys to needy dogs. Marteeny and Tootsie explain the need for Virtual Petwork:
We told our mom and dad that we wanted a place online, just for us, where we could connect with our pet pals. Dogs, cats, horses, fish, birds, lizards, even pot bellied pigs – any and all pets are welcome!
Harnessing the power of the social network, Virtual Petwork also features an Adoption Corner featuring the photos and stories of pets looking for their forever homes.
Virtual Petwork is a concept whose time has definitely come!
