Review: Carna4 Synthetic-Free Dog Food

Product: Carna4

What It Is: synthetic-free dog food

Manufacturer: Carna4 Inc., based in Canada. Dog food manufactured in USA.

DogTipper Review: We’re always looking for natural foods for our dogs whenever possible so when we were approached by Carna4 to review their new Carna4 All Life Stages Chicken dog food, we were very interested.

Packaged in a beautiful gold foil bag with a drawing inspired by Carna (Roman goddess of nourishment), the food definitely looked like something different. According to press materials, this food is “the first dry dog food to use real food ingredients, all grown in the U.S. and Canada, to supply the essential nutrients dogs need, without vitamin and mineral pre-mixes or other additives.”

What is in the food? It’s composed of 100 percent fresh, USDA table-grade chicken, salmon, and eggs; whole produce; and certified organic sprouted barley seeds, lentil seeds and flaxseeds. Those last ingredients plays a vital role in the appeal of Carna4. According to Carna4, sprouted seeds “increase antioxidants by up to 9,600%; encourage probiotic (‘good bacteria’) growth; prevent stomach upset; reduce intestinal gas; are ideal for pets with blood sugar issues and diabetes because they have lower gluten and glycemic levels than whole grains….”

Here’s a look at the complete ingredients list:

Fresh Chicken, Chicken Liver, Eggs, Certified Organic Sprouted Barley Seed, Wild Salmon, Whole Vegetables (Peas, Sweet Potatoes, Carrots, Spinach, Garlic), Amaranth, Whole Brown Rice, Certified Organic Sprouted Green Lentils, Potato Starch, Certified Organic Sprouted Flaxseed, Certified Organic Sprouted Red Lentils, Whole Apples, Sea Salt, Kelp, Yucca Schidigera, Rosemary and Parsley

The food is made by blending the whole ingredients then slow baking the food to destroy any pathogens. “We offer pet parents the opportunity to invest in their dog’s health with a safe alternative to commercial foods that’s more convenient and less expensive than raw or home cooking,” says David Stauble, President, CARNA4.

Our dogs loved Carna4. Right now we haven’t found it available in our area but we’re going to keep looking for it; we loved the natural ingredients and hope to add it to our list of foods we feed in rotation to our dogs. A big paws up for Carna4!

Price: Carna4 isn’t inexpensive; we found it sold in the US online for $39.99 for a 6-pound bag. Since it is nutritionally rich, dogs receive less food than many traditional foods which helps somewhat with price. Carna4 recently discussed the price issue online and said, “it works out to 2 cups or $3 to $4 per day for a 55 lb dog. Similar in cost to frozen raw but more convenient and cleaner.” Carna4 is sold in four bag sizes: 3 lb/1.36 kg, 6 lb/2.72 kg, 13 lb/5.90 kg and 26 lb/11.79 kg.

Where to Find Carna4: In Canada, Carna4 is sold in many Global Pet Foods stores in seven provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island), as well as select specialty pet food stores in California and the Midwest. Check the website for other distribution outlets.
