DogTipper Review: Frankie the Dachshund has become a doggie celebrity, thanks to a series of children’s books penned by her human Mom, Barbara Gail Techel. After injuring her back in a fall in 2006, Frankie was diagnosed with Intervertebral Disc Disease.
Despite months of therapy, her back refused to heal properly, leaving Frankie’s rear legs too weak to support her. Techel and her husband refused to give up on the spunky little dog, though, and she was eventually fitted with custom made set of wheels which allowed Frankie to regain her mobility.
Techel’s first book about Frankie, Frankie the Walk ‘N Roll Dog, published in 2008 was widely acclaimed, winning a host of children’s book awards. Subsequent books about Frankie have followed, all dedicated to making Frankie’s inspiring story an accessible lesson in life for children.
Frankie the Walk ‘N Roll Dog: A PAWsitive Coloring and Paper Doll Activity Book is the latest in the series and is aimed at younger children. Beautifully illustrated by Victoria Kay Lieffring, the book tells the story of Frankie interactively through coloring-book and paper doll graphics. Interspersed throughout the book are Frankie’s axioms for overcoming disabilities:
- Always be positive
- Never give up hope
- Be compassionate
- Treat others with kindness
- Believe in yourself
- Don’t judge others
- Be an inspiration to others
- Choose happiness.
In addition to the books, Frankie and Techel are active in promoting the lessons of perseverance, love, and happiness to the younger generation. They have visited numerous schools and regularly visit classrooms across the U.S. and Canada through video phone. The pair are licensed as a therapy dog team and Frankie was inducted into the Wisconsin Pet Hall of Fame for the awareness she brings to special needs dogs. As Frankie says,
“Always be positive; make a difference, and keep on rolling!”
The book is available from national book chains and through the publisher’s website which also sells other Frankie-inspired items. A big paws up for Frankie!!
