Book: You Had Me at Woof: How Dogs Taught Me the Secrets of Happiness
Author: Julie Klam
Publisher: Riverhead Books [Penguin Books (USA)]
DogTipper Review: Best-selling author Julie Klam has written a warm, funny account detailing how her dogs have shaped her life. Living alone in Manhattan, working at a so-so job, one night Klam has a dream that she met her canine soul-mate, a Boston Terrier named Otto.
“He was perfect in every way, and I instantly felt an unexplainable future love for him…”
Although not actively seeking a dog companion at the time, Klam takes the dream seriously and begins to research the breed, wondering if fate was tapping on her shoulder. Her inquiries soon lead her to volunteer at a Boston Terrier rescue organization. When she has the opportunity to adopt an abandoned Boston, she jumped at the chance, and has never looked back. “Buddy” was soon reborn as “Otto,” (per her dream) and soon became the center of her life.
“I thought about him every minute we were apart, brought him everywhere the law allowed, fed him everything I ate, carried him to my sleeping loft every night, and tucked him under the covers, his head on the pillow next to mine…It was the best relationship I’d ever been in.”
Caring for Otto marked a major change in Klam’s life, inspiring her to expand her horizons in other ways. No longer adrift and unfulfilled, she was able to move forward with her career and her personal life. Over the years, she married and had a daughter, but Otto remained an important member of the family. Her involvement with the rescue organization continued as well and she recounts her experiences with an assortment of Bostons she has rescued and fostered.
The book will surely delight dog-lovers with its accurate portrayal of the trials and rewards of caring for dogs. It strikes a nice balance between humor and seriousness and is a pleasure to read.
