Book: Good Dog! Practical Answers to Behavior Questions [ebook]
Author: Steve Dale
Publisher: Tribune Media Services
DogTipper Review: Well-known authority on pet behavior and certified animal behavior consultant Steve Dale has produced a singularly useful ebook for all of us who have questions about our dog’s behavior.
The author hosts two nationally syndicated radio shows, Steve Dale’s Pet World and The Pet Minute, which together air on more than 100 radio stations as well as a weekly WGN radio podcast. Dale has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, National Geographic Explorer, Pets: Part of the Family, and several Animal Planet television productions. Dale writes two weekly syndicated columns for Tribune Media Services (TMS). He’s also a contributing editor at USA Weekend, a columnist for Cat Fancy and thecatchannell.com, and a ChicagoNow blogger. Pet owners across the country have sought his expert advice on issues from controversial pet legislation to calming anxious cats and dogs.
Eschewing long-winded theories on dog behavior, Good Dog! is a practical guide which focuses on real-world situations. The book is structured around a question and answer format, with the author responding to concerns posed by actual pet parents. Much of the content was collected from Dale’s vast experience as a syndicated pet columnist and from his radio, TV, and podcast programs dealing with pets and their human counterparts.
Each of the book’s 14 chapters is organized around questions about major dog behavior issues such as aggression, house training, excessive barking, chewing, etc. Dale’s answers are concise, pithy and practical and are based firmly on positive reinforcement techniques. In the case of more complicated issues, such as dealing with noise anxieties, Dale offers insights from other dog behavior specialists. Wisely, his advice in each situation is prefaced with admonitions to first deal with any underlying physical or medical conditions which could be the root of the problem.
After dealing with commonly heard issues such as barking and chewing, Dale’s final chapter, “A Grab Bag of Offbeat Questions,” tackles several less common problems such as the male dog who refused to lift his leg while urinating, a dog who always howls when his owner plays the piano, and the Westie who developed the habit of skipping instead of running. As with the rest of the book, it makes for fascinating reading.
The book is prefaced with remarks by celebrity dog advocate Betty White, Animal Planet TV host and dog trainer Victoria Stilwell and veterinarian Dr. Sheldon Rubin. Good Dog! Practical Answers to Behavior Questions is a must-have for any dog lover.
