Review: Fellowes AP-300PH Air Purifier

Share with fellow dog lovers!

With two dogs, four cats, and miles of juniper trees around us, I know allergies! I’ve had allergies and asthma my entire life. With careful housecleaning, I work hard to keep my symptoms in check without using medication (I hate that foggy feeling I get from so many allergy medicines!)

One way I work to control allergens in our house is with an air cleaner. When the opportunity arose to test a Fellowes AP-300PH Air Purifier, I jumped at the chance. I’ve long known the Fellowes name so I wanted to give the Air Purifier a try.

The biggest triggers for my allergies are dust and mold. Cat dander is an issue as well (thankfully I’m able to keep that manageable by letting John do a lot of the brushing). With summer coming to an end, dust is an issue in our house (we’ve had a really dry summer so things are *always* dusty in the house.) Fall will bring more pollens (ragweed!!), and winter will bring the “cedar fever” season here when the juniper trees shed so much pollen the woods look like they’re filled with smoke.

The Fellowes Air Purifier is designed to purify the air in a 300-square-foot room (they also make a smaller model for rooms up to 230 square feet.) Step one: deciding where to place the unit in our house. We decided to put it in the bedroom.

I know from talking with doctors through the years and from research that it’s especially important to reduce allergens in the bedroom so your body can recharge during the night. The next day, you’ll begin anew, encountering allergens as you go through the day but then coming back to the bedroom at night to clear out the allergens with clean air. (Five more tips: don’t keep your dirty clothes hamper–filled with allergens that you’ve picked up through the day–in the bedroom; vacuum frequently; dust with a damp cloth so the allergens don’t become airborne; check into anti-allergen bedding or at least a pillowcase; and don’t let your pets in the bedroom. I have to confess that our dogs and cats sleep in the bedroom…but four out of five isn’t bad!)

Once that decision was made, it was time to put it to work. We first opened the unit and removed the plastic covering from the True HEPA filter and the carbon filter:

Once that was done, it was time to test our air quality. We plugged in the unit and, for the next four minutes, the lights flashed and the fan ran on Medium speed (out of four speeds) as it checked the air quality:

We’ve had other air purifiers in the past but I’ve never seen one with this air purity sensor that monitors air quality and automatically adjusts the fan speed to keep the air cleaner! You’ll notice that there’s a filter change indicator on the control panel that will indicate when both the True HEPA and the carbon filters need replacing.

Once our air testing was done, the speed dropped back to Low, a super quiet setting. Nonetheless, the unit had to be checked by everyone in the house, starting with Linus…

…and continuing through everyone else until finally Irie checked it out:

All the dogs and cats knew was that it was very quiet and that it blew out a little air (which Tiki loved!)…but we were impressed in many other ways. We learned that the Air Purifier works with a four-step process:

  • pulling the air through a carbon filter to remove odors and capture the large particles
  • Sanitized™, to reduce the development of bacteria, fungi and those dreaded dust mites on the carbon filter
  • True HEPA Filter. I’m always on the lookout for a HEPA filter when shopping for a vacuum cleaner and the Air Purifier also has a True HEPA filter that removes 99.97 percent of particles and impurities down to as small as 0.3 microns. Cat dander is far smaller than dog dander but even it is 2-3 microns in size, large enough to be picked up by the HEPA filter. The filter can also remove my two big triggers, dust mites and mold spores (grr…) as well as pollen, odors, and cigarette smoke.
  • PlasmaTRUE™ Technology. PlasmaTrue™ Technology which removes airborne pollutants and gets air cleaner at the molecular level. This means that the filter instantly neutralizes viruses and germs in the air which I really love for the upcoming winter months when the house is all closed up and you feel like you’re sharing the same air with a family member who could have a cold or the flu!

We’ve been testing the air purifier for a week now, and I’ve been loving it! I feel that my breathing has been better, and I also feel that our house has been less dusty. I’ll be sure to give you all an update when cedar season hits. I give a big paws up for the Fellowes Air Purifier for pet households!
