Reducing Holiday Stress

On Friday, we’ll get out our holiday ornaments and begin our annual preparations for the putting up our Christmas tree, lights, and decorations. It’s a fun and festive time in our house, and our dogs enjoy it, too…but we know that the disruption to their routine can be a little stressful. The arrival of holiday guests is especially stressful for Irie who, although she loves to be around people she knows, gets tense with the arrival of people she hasn’t met very often.

We recently completed a 30-day trial of Comfort Zone® with D.A.P.® (Dog Appeasing Pheromone) with Irie and Tiki in preparation for the holidays. The product is designed to help reduce stress-related behavior in dogs caused by thunderstorms (and you know how Irie hates thunderstorms!), loud noises like fireworks, adjusting to a new environment, transitions, being left alone or traveling.

We’re looking forward to seeing how it works on New Year’s Eve, when fireworks can cause a lot of stress for Irie, but, for now, we decided to put it to the test in just our everyday situation. (This company also makes Comfort Zone® with Feliway for cat households; so we didn’t have both product tests underway at the same time, our celebrity canines and cats blogger, Grace Sydney, test the Comfort Zone® with Feliway in her cat household.)

We plugged in the Comfort Zone® with with D.A.P.®; we didn’t detect any odor in using the diffuser. Although it may take up to 90 days to get the best results, it seemed that the dogs were relaxed every time we had it plugged in (we even caught Tiki cuddling with Felix, below): Along with calming adult dogs, Comfort Zone® products are also recommended for puppies. They’re helpful for calming the nighttime crying of a new puppy, reducing excessive chewing and barking for dogs, and, if you have cats, their products are considered 95 percent effective in reducing scratching and urine marking for cats.

Comfort Zone® products are available at specialty pet stores including PetSmart and Petco, independent pet stores and online.
