We all know how uncomfortable it is to be overweight. Our clothes don’t fit. We feel tired (and grumpy). Exercise…and even getting around for daily tasks…seems like so much work.
Overweight pets run into many of the same hurdles. (OK, most don’t have to worry about those too-snug jeans but have you ever had to let out the collar on your adult dog? Then you know what I mean…) Playing fetch no longer has the appeal that it once had and even a fun walk can leave your dog panting on a cool day.
We know that the proper diet, combined with exercise, can get us back on the right track, and the same holds true for our overweight dogs and overweight cats. Recently Hill’s created a new prescription diet to address the needs of pet lovers looking for diets for dogs, one that would help their pets feel full while, at the same time, helping them to reach their optimal weight. Hill’s® Prescription Diet® Canine Metabolic Advanced Weight Solution dry food (as well as wet food and treats) was formulated to help your overweight pet’s metabolism act more like that of a lean animal. Using many of the same principles as the Mediterranean diet, this prescription diet gives your dog the feeling of fullness after his meal.
The results? Weight loss…but so much more. As you can see in the video above of Bear, an overweight dog whose family had tried everything, his weight change brought about a change in energy level, too. Bear became more playful and more active. The hope is that proper weight can also impact the lifelong health–and longevity–of a pet as well.
Well, what weight loss story would be complete with out a before and after photo? The results veterinarians have seen have been dramatic, like these before and after photos of Gracie:
Gracie had been surrendered at a shelter–at a weight of over 78 pounds. Under the care of Teacher’s Pet Rescue, Gracie slimmed down to 45 pounds–and found a forever home. That’s an amazing weight loss…and it’s easy to see not only the healthy weight Gracie is now sporting but the smile on her face.
This month, we’re going to be switching our cat Coco to the Hill’s® Prescription Diet® Feline Metabolic Advanced Weight Solution. She’s a big cat (a Turkish Van) but shouldn’t be as large as she is, currently weighing in at 16.8 pounds. We hope you’ll follow her weight loss journey on our sister site, CatTipper.com, in the coming weeks.
Keeping our pets a healthy weight is good for all of us. An active dog not only makes us feel better, seeing our best friend at an optimum weight, but helps keep us active as well, encouraging us to get out on walks and to have fun! As Bear’s father says in the video above, Bear lost weight and “I gained a friend.”
