MediumThis post is sponsored by Dogswell. As always, we only share information about products that we feel comfortable using with our own pets. All opinions are entirely our own.

As you know, late last year we were super busy writing The Healthy Hound Cookbook, formulating over 125 recipes for dogs using only whole foods. During our research, we talked with many experts, pet nutritionists, and pet parents as well.

MediumOne common thread came through in every conversation: we all want healthy food for our dogs. Food that we can trust to provide the nutrition that our dogs need to be healthy and active.

Like an infant whose diet you completely control, your dog looks to you for all his nutritional needs. (OK, we won’t talk about the grass he scarfed down on your walk…or the lizard he caught in the back yard.) In general, you are responsible for the six nutrient groups your dog requires: vitamins, fat, minerals, carbohydrates, protein, and water. It’s our responsibility to select food that meets our dogs’ nutritional needs.

When LiveFree™ contacted us about their new food, we knew we wanted to share it with DogTipper readers because it provides, in both canned and dry food, food with protein as a first ingredient. You won’t find grain, corn, wheat, soy, gluten, potatoes, tapioca, BHA/BHT, artificial colors, artificial flavors, or artificial preservatives in the formulas (available for puppy, adult, and senior dogs).

The LiveFree line, a holistic line of foods, features ultra-low glycemic, grain- and potato-free food for dogs that’s high in animal protein. Here’s a look at the Adult chicken formula:

As you can see, this ingredients list includes familiar meats, vegetables, and fruits. Some of our favorites are:

Blueberries: Rich in antioxidants, this superfood is a favorite with many dogs, ours included.

Carrots: Carrots are a favorite snack for many dogs, enjoyed raw as an alternative to a rawhide chew but for your dog to get the nutrients in the carrot, though, they have to be included in a food like this or steamed, cooked, or pureed  to unleash its powerhouse of vitamins.

Eggs: Not only are eggs a great source of protein for your dog, but they pack a real punch in terms of nutrients.

Pumpkin: Pumpkin is not just a fall favorite but a great ingredient for dogs year-around. Amazingly, pumpkin can be helpful for both constipation and diarrhea, and it’s also another excellent food for making your dog feel full.

Spinach: This leafy green is known as a great source of iron.
