Whether you, like us, have pear trees and are trying to find a creative way to use them or you’re just looking for a healthy homemade dog treat recipe, we’ve got a solution: pear dog treats! These are easy to make and our dogs loved them.
Can Dogs Eat Pears?
Yes, dogs can eat pears. The flesh of the pear makes a healthy treat, and pears are a good source of water-soluble fiber as well as Vitamin C.
Pear seeds—like those of apples—cannot be eaten by dogs and should always be discarded.
Like apple seeds, cherry pips, peach pits, pear pips, plum pips, and apricot pips, pear seeds contain a compound that breaks down into cyanide–so throw away the seeds. (You shouldn’t eat them either!)
Making Pear Dog Treats
We’ve got pears, pears, pears and were trying to figure out what to do with them!
We have five pear trees here that grow hard, not-very-sweet pears. The deer love them and have just about eaten their fill so we harvested some of the fruit that was higher up on the trees.
We washed and cored the pears (remember: dogs can NOT eat pear pips or seeds.) I cut each pear into about four pieces.
The other ingredients were simple:
- chopped pears
- whole wheat flour
- water
- baking powder
- blackstrap molasses
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. and grease a cookie sheet.
I chopped my pears in a blender, doing just a little at a time (which was still faster than chopping them by hand). Even after using the two cups of chopped pears for the recipe, I still had several cups left to freeze for the future.
Next, I just tossed everything in a large bowl and mixed it by hand. The result is a very sticky, heavy dough.
Turn out the dough on a lightly floured surface then knead (add some more flour if it’s extremely sticky. It will be a little sticky anyway because of the molasses).
Roll it out to about 1/4 inch thickness then cut it in squares (or cut into bone shapes like I did!)
These biscuits don’t spread as they cook so you can crowd them onto your cookie sheet…just make sure they’re not touching.
Pop the cookie sheet in the oven for half an hour (the bottom of the biscuits should be golden brown when done) then cool the biscuits completely before refrigerating or serving.
These treats will last about 5-7 days in the refrigerator or freeze for longer storage.
Our dogs loved these (and I loved finding a good use for those pears!)

Pear Dog Treats
Ingredients
- 2 cups chopped pears, cored
- 2-1/2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 3 tablespoons blackstrap molasses
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Grease a cookie sheet or line with parchment paper.
Wash and core pears. Discard seeds.
Chop each pear into four pieces.
Process pears in a food processor or blender until they are coarsely chopped.
Turn out the dough on a lightly floured surface then knead.
Roll dough to about 1/4 inch thickness then cut in shapes.
Bake for 30 minutes.
Cool completely before serving or refrigerating.
