This tasty peanut butter and applesauce dog treat recipe is especially fun to make when apples are in season. You can use purchased unsweetened applesauce–or make your own!
How to Make Applesauce for Your Dog
It’s easy to make your own unsweetened applesauce– just wash, core, and peel the apples (remember, apple seeds are toxic to dogs).
Dice the apples and place in large pot with enough water to cover them and bring near boiling. Turn down the heat and cook until soft.
Drain then puree in a blender and refrigerate for up to four days or jar or freeze for future use.
Applesauce can be used many ways in dog treats (or even as a little meal topper!) Apples are a good source of Vitamins A and C for your dog.
Preparing Peanut Butter and Applesauce Dog Treats
Along with the applesauce, the ingredients list for these crunch dog treats is super simple: peanut butter (crunchy or smooth), whole wheat flour, oats and baking powder.
IMPORTANT NOTE: A few manufacturers have added Xylitol, a sweetener that is extremely toxic to dogs, to their peanut butter. Be sure to check the ingredients list of your peanut butter to make sure that Xylitol is not included. The best peanut butter to buy for dogs is one that includes only peanuts, no added salt or sugar.
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F and grease two cookie sheets.
Next, just mix all your ingredients, stirring until they’re well-mixed and ready for kneading.
Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface.
Depending on the oil in your peanut butter, you might have to add a teaspoon of olive oil if you find the mixture is a little too crumbly (I did).
Roll the dough out to about 1/4 inch thickness then cut the dough in desired shapes and place on your cookie sheets.
Pop the cookie sheets in the preheated oven for about 25 minutes until lightly browned.
Let the doggie biscuits cool completely before serving them to your dog or refrigerating them. They were very popular in this house (and even inspected by one of our cats, Linus!)

Ingredients
- 3 cups whole wheat flour
- 2 cups oats
- 1 cup peanut butter (I used chunky peanut butter)
- 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F and grease two cookie sheets or line with parchment paper.
- Mix all ingredients, stirring until well-mixed and ready for kneading.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface. Depending on the oil in your peanut butter, you might have to add a teaspoon of olive oil if you find the mixture is a little too crumbly.
- Roll the dough out to about ¼-inch thickness then cut the dough into 36 desired shapes and place on your cookie sheets.
- Bake in preheated oven for about 25 minutes until lightly browned.
- Remove from the oven and cool completely before serving or refrigerating.
- Refrigerate for 5 days or freeze in an airtight container for up to 6 months.
