Witchy Chicken Fingers Recipe

Share with fellow dog lovers!

fingers-final

This treat is fun for Halloween, especially if you’re attending or hosting a dog Halloween party. This is a canine variation of the ever-popular Witches’ Fingers cookie for humans (here’s a people recipe from Allrecipes.com) but our doggie recipe is simpler, substituting the sugars and flavorings with savory chicken and the red decorating gel with plain old molasses.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1-1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1-1/2 cups cooked chicken
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • Almonds

First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees and grease a cookie sheet. (I only needed one large cookie sheet for all the treats.)

With that done, it’s time to turn your attention to the chicken. I was in a hurry so I used canned chicken breast (which has a lot of liquid). If you use chicken you’ve prepared, you may need to add a little water (or broth to be extra yummy) when it comes time to mix everything.

Whether you use boiled or canned chicken, start by tossing the chicken in the blender or food processor and blending until it has the consistency of baby food. (Or you could really save time and just use a couple of jars of baby food if you like. Always make sure the baby food has no onion powder, though.) Go ahead and mix together the chicken, egg, and baking powder.

Now add this chicken mixture to the flours and start kneading the dough, adding a little more liquid if the dough’s too dry or a little more flour if it’s too sticky. (The dough should have the consistency of pizza dough.)

Now it’s time for the fun part: shaping the fingers!

fingers2

Pinch off about a ping pong ball-sized piece of dough and start rolling it between your palms to make a tube of dough about four inches long. Roll it to about finger thickness (these will plump up a little when baking).

Next, hold the “finger” in your hands with your hands side by side (like you’re holding bicycle handlebars, but closer). Slightly squeeze together your hands to create a “knuckle” in the middle of the cookie. Place the cookie on the cookie sheet.

fingers-5

When you’re all done, you’ll have about 15 “fingers” in all. (Mine started off skinny and got thicker as I went on and tried to get the recipe done and photographed before dog walking time!)

Now it’s decorating time! You’ll use the molasses to paint a little spot beneath the “fingernail”…it will ooze out from beneath the almond “nail” and look a little like blood…so don’t worry about this being perfect.

fingers-7

I tried using a spoon to drop a few drops on the fingertip but wound up using my fingertip to just paint a little on the fingers and that worked better.

In this molasses, place a single almond (the tip of the almond should be pointing out, like a spiky fingernail) and press down just a little to secure the almond in the dough.

If you like, you can also dip the other end (the “severed” part of the finger) in molasses. I did this on a few and the look is realistic…but the molasses tried to run under the treats and was a little bit of a sticky mess.

fingers-6

Pop the cookie sheet in the oven for about 20-25 minutes and you’re done! Cool the treats completely before serving and refrigerating!
