Recipe: Canine Catnip Cookies

Share with fellow dog lovers!

We all know that many cats like catnip. (No, not all cats have a sensitivity to catnip, in spite of popular belief.) But did you know that dogs like catnip as well?

Our dogs love catnip toys (so much that they try to eat them). And while I don’t want Irie and Tiki to eat our cats’ catnip toys because of the materials in the toy, catnip itself isn’t harmful unless it has been treated by pesticides or other chemicals. (Look for certified organic catnip if possible or grow your own.)

We grow catnip for our cats and dogs; it’s an easy plant (and the plants make a LOT of catnip). Over on our CatTipper sister site we have an article about how to grow catnip for your pets but here on DogTipper I wanted to share a recipe for cookies we made yesterday for our dogs using catnip!

Canine Catnip Cookies

Canine Catnip Cookies

Ingredients

  • 1 jar, 2.5 ounces chicken (or ham) baby food
  • 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed organic catnip, optional
  • 1/2 cup powdered milk
  • 1 egg, beaten

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or lightly spray with oil.
  2. In a large bowl, mix all ingredients and stir completely. Roll out the dough (it will be heavy and sticky) to 1/4 inch.
  3. Using a pizza cutter, cut into 1/2-inch strips. Cut again for squares, if you like, or bake as strips to later break into smaller pieces.
  4. Bake for 15-20 minutes. Flip strips, turn off oven and crack oven door, then allow cookies to cool in the oven for extra crispiness.
  5. Refrigerate in for three to five days.
