Dog Friendly Buchanan Dam, Texas

The biggest of the Highland Lake chain, Lake Buchanan is formed by Buchanan Dam, the largest multi-arch dam in the world. A favorite with anglers, the northeast side of the lake offers one of the best opportunities to spot the American bald eagle from November through March.

Attractions that Welcome Your Dog

Black Rock Park. This Lower Colorado River Authority park offers overnight accommodations for pet families (see below) but it’s also popular as a day-use park. Bring your fishing gear, swimming shoes, or birding binoculars to enjoy a day of fun on the shores of the expansive lake. Dogs are welcome on leash throughout the park. Fall Creek Vineyards. In nearby Tow, dogs are permitted on the grounds of this award-winning winery often lauded as one of Texas’s best. Located right on the shores of Lake Buchanan, the vineyards here span sixty-five acres. Info: 1820 County Rd. 222; (325) 379-5361; www.fcv.com.

Five of the cabins welcome dog travelers; the cabins each include two sets of bunk beds. The cabins feature electricity, an outside water spigot, heat and air-conditioning, a ceiling fan, a front porch, a picnic table and a grill. A restroom with showers is located nearby and the area also includes Wi-Fi access. From the cabins, you can walk your dog down to the lake shore for a swim.
