Evacuation Tip #2

Yesterday we talked about beginning your evacuation plan by deciding who would be responsible for going to pick up your dog and deciding where you would regroup.
Once your family has regrouped after a disaster or in an evacuation, where will you go? It’s best to make plans before the event happens so you can just put your plans into motion.
Do you have friends or relatives that will allow you and your dog to stay with them away from the evacuated area? Or will you need to look for a hotel?
If you will need a hotel, try to identify several hotels that accept pets. (Remember, there will be a big demand for rooms so you need more than one choice.) A good place to start your research is http://www.petswelcome.com/ which lists over 25,000 pet-friendly hotels and B&Bs. Be sure to check for restrictions. Some properties may only accept one pet, some might limit the size of dog, some might not accept certain breeds.
Also, make a list of kennels in the town where you might have to evacuate with phone numbers. If you are not able to obtain a room at a pet-friendly hotel, you may have to board your dog until you can make further arrangements.
