This week we’ve been discussing making your pet evacuation plan and finding dog-friendly hotels outside your home area in case of an evacuation. Today we’d like to offer you a third in our week-long series of emergency evacuation tips:
ID Your Pet
In an emergency, dogs can become separated from owners. You might find yourself in a shelter and your dog in another shelter. You might relocate to a pet-friendly hotel but your dog suddenly bolts out the hotel door. There’s a whole list of possibilities.
Make sure your dog has good identification which means a current ID tag on his collar and a microchip. Put the microchip number and phone number in your emergency papers that you would carry with you in case of evacuation.
If you actually do relocate due to an evacuation, spend a few minutes and a couple of dollars to get a second ID tag made with your current location and cell phone number.
