Before Your Baby Arrives

Bringing home a baby soon? The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has issued some new tips for introducing your dog to your new baby.

Dr. Bonnie Beaver, an AVMA past president and a professor at Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine, says the work begins before the baby arrives.

“Begin training the dog to observe a schedule — treats at a certain time of day, walks at a certain time of day,” she explains. “When mom gets home with the baby, her attention will be elsewhere, so the dog won’t get attention on demand anymore.”

More tips before the baby arrives:

• find out if your dog likes children. With your dog on a leash, arrange a meeting with someone else’s children.

• if your dog is frightened or shows aggression with the children, arrange a consultation with a veterinarian.
