Dog lovers know that chocolate is poisonous to dogs…but did you know that the same applies to xylitol, an artificial sweetener found in many chewing gums? The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) is cautioning dog owners not only to keep a sharp out for their dogs around chocolate candy during the Halloween season but gum as well.

“Children tend to want to share their treats with their pets, and the dog is all too happy to oblige,” said Dr. James O. Cook, president of the AVMA. “Warn your children beforehand that table scraps are unhealthy for pets, and that candy can be deadly.”
