Choosing the Right Type of Fence

Choosing the right type of fence for your dog is no easy task. You’ve got a lot to take into consideration: your dog’s temperament, your budget, your lawn, and more.
First, ask yourself a few questions:
- What is your budget?
- How tall is your dog (or, if a puppy, how tall do you expect him to grow)?
- How high can he jump?
- How strong is your dog?
- Does he dig?
- Does he try to climb?
- Does your community have specific restrictions about backyard fences and their type/height?
- Will you always be with him in the yard or will he be alone at times?
Your choices include wrought iron, masonry, wood, standard farm fencing, chain-link and more. Take into consideration your dog in selecting the fence type. Make sure the spacing in the fence is smaller than your dog’s head. Also, consider your dog’s climbing abilities; some dogs will require a six-foot-high fence while a four-foot-high fence will be fine for others.
Electronic fences or electronic pet containment systems are another option featuring a hidden or buried wire system. They’re a solution in communities that will not allow you to install standard fences or any other visual barriers between your property and the next. They’re not a perfect solution, though; some dogs will barrel right on through the invisible barrier in pursuit of another dog or to chase a car. Also, electronic fences don’t prohibit other dogs (or coyotes) or children from coming INSIDE the fence.
