Finding a Lost Dog

No one wants to think of the possibility of their dog getting lost but it happens every day. What should you do if your dog gets lost?

First, make sure he’s not somewhere on your property, hidden under a bed, tucked in the outskirts of your yard, etc.

Next, start walking and searching your neighborhood, both calling your dog and shaking a box of his favorite treats. Before you leave the house, put his favorite blanket and some of his favorite treats and toys just outside your door; hopefully the scent will lure him home.

If you don’t have any luck in your neighborhood, it’s time to hit the phones. Start by calling the local shelters and animal control office as well as local veterinarians. Call your neighbors and alert them to keep an eye out for your dog.

Get your photos of your dog–both a head shot and a full body shot–and make fliers for your neighborhood and surrounding streets as well as fliers to show your local shelters and animal control offices. Ask local businesses if you can post a sign. Is there a local dog park? Make fliers to hand out to fellow dog lovers who will be likely to keep an eye out for your dog.

Most of all, keep trying. When you’ve done everything on the list, start all over again and check back in with your neighbors and local businesses.
