Getting Your Puppy Accustomed to His Collar

Learning to walk on a leash is an important part of a puppy’s training but before he can be on the leash he needs to become accustomed to wearing a collar. Even if you’ll be using a puppy harness for his early walks, you’ll want him to wear a collar with identification and your contact information.

You’ll first want to make sure his collar isn’t too tight or too loose. Your puppy will immediately make attempts to shed himself of this new “thing.” If the collar’s too loose, he can slip his lower jaw under the collar; he might then panic or start to chew the collar to pieces.

Keep an eye on your puppy when he’s new to the collar and try to distract his with toys. Play together and soon he will forget that he’s wearing the collar. Only then can you begin to plan your first steps toward leash training.
