Helping Shelters and Pet Charities

The current economic turmoil is hitting everyone hard–and that includes animal shelters. Not only have they seen an increase in the number of animals due to home foreclosures but donations have dropped at the same time their expenses, like all of ours, continue to increase.

How can you help? As the holidays approach, think of how you can give, whether that means time or money. Consider:

• making a cash donation to your local animal shelter or to a national charitable group

• asking your local shelter what they need. Could they use blankets and comforters you could donate?

• giving your time. Would it help them if you could donate an afternoon a week to help out? One weekend day per month?

• thinking of a shelter adoption if you are contemplating buying a pet this holiday season.

• making holiday purchases through your shelter or a pet charity. Do they have an online store where you can make purchases, whether that’s holiday cards or dog sweaters?
