Keeping Your Dog Warm This Winter

Although it’s always best if your dog can stay indoors, especially at night, if he lives outside make sure your dog will be comfortable during cold weather. The American Humane Association has just released some tips on keeping outdoor dogs warm during the winter months:

Provide a Warm Shelter. Dogs need a draft-free shelter; it should be large enough for them to stand up and turn around inside but small enough that it will retain their body heat.

Provide Warm Bedding. Just because a dog has fur doesn’t mean he doesn’t get cold! Be sure to provide a warm bedding for him such as a layer of straw or hay or other bedding.

Provide Extra Food. The activity of staying warm burns extra calories so be sure to provide extra food on cold winter nights. Talk to your veterinarian for advice on the proper diet.
