Keeping Your Dog from Christmas Chocolates

Christmas and chocolate go hand in, well, mouth…at least for human holidaymakers. It’s important to never let your dog partake in your holiday baking, though, when it involves chocolate.

Chocolate contains theobromine which can cause vomiting, diarrhea and hyperactivity in your dog. About 6 to 12 hours after your dog ingests the chocolate, symptoms appear. In severe cases, chocolate can even lead to coma and death.

Different types of chocolate contain different amounts of theobromine; the dark or cooking (baker’s) chocolate is the most toxic. All forms of chocolate should be off limits for dogs, though.

Whether you’re making cookies, cakes, or candies that involve chocolate, keep your dog out of the kitchen–and keep plates of tempting goodies out of your dog’s reach!
