Making Your Dog Eat Slower

Does your dog gulp his food? Our lab mix does and, with such a deep-chested dog, it a habit that can cause some serious problems, namely Bloat (or formally Gastric Dilatation Volvulus or GDV). We’ve been taking steps to slow her eating including raising her food bowl up off the floor, feeding her twice a day instead of once, and, most recently, trying different types of bowls to slow her eating.

You’ll find dog bowls made to slow eating by means of obstructions in the bowl, segments, and spreading the food out over a wider area (instead of in a pile your dog can just vacuum one in a bite or two).

Looking for a recycled solution? Try a muffin tin. The multiple cups will make your dog slow down during mealtime. Each regular size muffin holder can hold about 3.5 ounces; a jumbo muffin or cupcake holder will hold about eight ounces. You’ll find them in aluminum, cast iron and bakeware but avoid ones with Teflon coating since your dog may chip the coating with his teeth.
