Preventing a Marley in Your House

Movie goers and book lovers familiar with the Marley & Me hit know that an untrained dog can cause all sorts of havoc in a household...but that can be prevented. The Association of Pet Dog Trainers has come up with a list of tips for using positive reward training. Yesterday's column shared their tip on understanding your dog's breed tendencies and today's tips take a look at the calm behavior you can promote in your dog's home:

Teach puppies to love their crate. Crates prevent dogs from engaging in destructive behaviors around the house when owners are not at home or unable to supervise them with their complete attention.

Reinforce Your Dog's Calm, Quiet Behavior. According to trainer Tayrn Hodge, reinforce your dog for calm, quiet behavior and to have them "sit or lie down to get everything - sit at doorways, sit or lie-down for meals, sit for petting, sit for getting his leash on, sit before tossing his ball."
