Understanding Your Dog’s Breed Tendencies

If you’ve seen the Marley & Me movie or read the bestselling book, you know that Marley is a lab…and a handful. Labs are the most popular dog in the US but they’re also among the top five dogs given up to shelters. Why? These big, boisterous dogs need plenty of outlets for their energy and training along the way.

The Association of Pet Dog Trainers, the world’s largest educational and professional association for dog trainers, has issued a set of tips from some of its members about the importance of positive reward training and living with an “unruly” Marley-type dog. This week we’ll be covering their tips so you can start your new year out on the right paw.

First, learn about the type of dog you’re getting before you get your dog. Paul Owens, author and trainer jokes, “…in my 35 years of training, I’ve met maybe two Labs who aren’t constantly self-employed as gardeners, home decorators and official bull-in-a-china shop court jesters.”

You’ll find breed information on many sites; some of our favorites are the American Kennel Club
and DogBreedInfo.com.
