Helping Children Help Shelter Animals for Valentine’s

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and the day that celebrates love extends to include a love of four-legged friends. Is there a way you can help children help shelter pets on Valentine’s?

With some creative thinking, you’ll find several ways to encourage kids to raise money for local shelters. Today’s tips come from AnimalShelterTips.com, a site filled with great ideas for shelters and rescue groups. Some ideas:

• Organize a candy-making class for ‘tweens and teenagers

AnimalShelterTips.com recommends that, after a candy-making session, “Parents can help the kids sell their goodies at a Valentine candy sale and/or charge to attend the class.”

• Conduct an art class for kids to make Valentines

The responsibility for this class can lie with an art teacher, professional artist or a creative parent. The website suggests, “Kids could make several cards and sell these along with the candy sale mentioned above. Or, ask a local art gallery to showcase these cards and sell them for the kids. Kids could pay a fee to attend the art class.”

• Conduct a pet photography class

We especially love this idea since two of our favorite subjects are pets and photography! AnimalShelterTips.com recommends, “Find a large enough place to bring animals, maybe an outdoor location, and a photographer who’s good at pet photography. Ask the photographer to donate his time.” As far as fundraising, “To raise money, students could pay a fee to attend the class. Find a way for others to vote on the photos, such as posting the photos online at the animal shelter’s website or local newspaper’s website. Find donors such as camera shops, photographers, galleries, etc., to pay $1 for each vote with the proceeds going to the shelter.”
