Making Your Dog’s Collar More Visible

Does your dog’s collar disappear beneath a cloud of dog hair?
We had that problem. Our medium-haired dog, Tiki, always wears a collar…but you’d never know it just to glance at her. We tried brightly colored collars but they still worked their way under the hair on the ruff of her neck. Next, we tried a bright bandana, tied around her neck as a supplement to the collar. It looked cute…and it lasted about 15 minutes, thanks to the “help” she received from our other dog, Irie.
The solution? A red bandana, cut in half and sewn around the collar.
Sewing the Collar
First, cut the bandana in half (not diagonally to produce pointed ends but through the middle to create two rectangular pieces.) Set one piece aside for a future collar (if you’re like us, you know you’ll need it.)
Next, fold the bandana in half lengthwise. Lay the collar over the bandana and continue folding the bandana so you create a tube of bandana around the collar. By hand, sew up the edge. (If you’d like to be able to wash the bandana, make the tube loosely fitting around the collar. If your dog is tough on collars, sew it firmly around the collar so it can’t be ripped off.) Don’t worry about pretty stitches but make sure your stitches are tight, especially on the ends.
The Finished Product
Your finished product is a bandana-wrapped collar. You’ll still have access to the ends and the tag. Make sure you loosen the collar a little; the additional fabric will mean the pre-fitted collar will now be a little tight on your dog.
Best of all, you’ll have a collar that’s easy to see and doesn’t cost a thing but a little time and some scraps of material!
