Selecting Natural Dog Treats

If your dogs are like ours, they love…really, really love…treats. But how can you be sure your dog’s treats are healthy?
Selecting healthy dog treats is much like shopping for healthy foods for your family. Read the label! You’ll want to avoid long chemical names so check that label, even on name brands you’ve purchased for years.
Look for treats that use natural or organic ingredients. Beef jerky treats, for instance, should indicate beef as the first ingredient–not just “beef flavored” halfway down a list of ingredients. That list of ingredients should be short, with very few added chemicals. Natural or organic ingredients are healthier and safer than synthetics–but always read that label and make sure the manufacturer isn’t using only one natural ingredient to sneak in that “natural” label.
Look for treats that are made with no artificial flavorings or colorings. Those bargain bags of multicolored biscuits are loaded with artificial flavors, artificial colors, and meat or poultry by-products. (By-products can include all the parts of the cow or chicken that are thrown away when the animals are processed for human food. You wouldn’t eat those parts…should your dog?)
Don’t forget that some additives are healthy for your dog. Vitamins and minerals can all help your dog develop and maintain strong bones, muscles and teeth. Essential oils and fatty acids can ensure that he has a healthy coat and skin.
