Teaching Your Puppy Not to Bite

Biting is a natural form of play with puppies but, no matter how cute it is, it’s a behavior that should be managed. That tiny puppy’s nips quickly become more powerful bites as he grows.

To teach you puppy not to bite, first make sure everyone in the family has the same plan. Consistency in dog training is extremely important, down to the youngest members of the family.

To stop your puppy’s biting, understand how his litter mates stop the bites. If a puppy bites too hard, his litter mates will yelp. If your puppy bites you, do the same thing: yelp like a puppy. Immediately stop playing. He’ll see the play has stopped, and you can move your hand away from his mouth. Puppies soon learn that it’s no fun when the play stops!

As your puppy plays without biting, reward him with treats. Keep your voice upbeat and happy and praise him for playing without biting.
