Choosing an Organic Dog Bed

You’ve done all you can to feed your dog natural, healthy treats, to groom him with natural products. But what about his bedding? For the greenest option, keep a few things in mind when selecting an organic dog bed:

  • Organic fibers. Like people, some dogs have sensitive skin but, allergic or not, you’ll rest better knowing that your dog isn’t sleeping on a bed filled with toxins. Look for dog beds with an organic cotton or hemp cover.
  • Post-consumer plastic fibers. You’ll find many green dog bed fillings on the market today made from post-consumer plastic fibers, basically material from recycled water bottles. While these types of synthetic fibers are considered safe since the material was originally used as a food container, there have been mixed reviews, though, about the safety of any plastic for long term use.
  • Organic kapok. If your dog likes the Princess and the Pea type of fluffy, pillow-like bed, check out a bed stuffed with organic kapok. Kapok is a plant-based material, like cotton or hemp that’s been used for centuries to stuff furniture and pillows.
  • Organic blankets. Does your dog prefer to sleep on a really firm surface such as the floor? If so and you’re just looking for a blanket to keep the chill off, check out organic cotton or hemp blankets; both are machine washable. Looking for firm stuffing? Organic kapok is again an option–just be sure that it is densely packed to provide firmness your dog likes.
